On est ensemble
On est ensemble“ (we are together) is a French expression extensively used in Senegal to confirm a common objective or to reaffirm a joint effort. This series touches on the subject matter of religion as an experience of identity, fluidity of culture, interconnectedness, and representation and was shot on Fadiouth, also known as „l’île aux coquillage“ (shell island), just off the coast of the intermediate point between the dry Sahel Belt and the humid Casamance region in Senegal. Whilst Islam is the predominant religion nationwide, the majority of the approximately 5000 people living on Fadiouth practices the Christian faith. Despite the Christian majority, Muslims and Christians find their last resting place on the same graveyard. The white shells on the graves of Fadiouth island, the general quality of light reflected off the white painted crosses and crescents created a somewhat joyful ambiance. During festive seasons, when the smell of freshly grilled pigling wafts through the clam shell-paved alleyways of Fadiouth and the local bars serve celebratory drinks people occasionally hear their Muslim neighbors say: „Today, I’m Christian!“
